My work in clay involves a variety of processes using various firing temperatures & techniques to add surface texture & depth on vessel & sculptural forms. Process is essential to the creation of these forms; most are begun on the potter’s wheel, some begin as textured slabs and are then finished by hand building or on the potter’s wheel. Thrown forms are simple in shape, volume & line to allow emphasis of the clay’s surface.
Stoneware & porcelain vessels are fired at 2200º F oxidation while alternative fired vessels are sawdust/wood fired at low temperature, in barrel & saggar. Form surfaces are further enhanced by the use of clay slips, terra sigillata, reticulation glazes, matte glazes & natural wood ash. Alternative fired vessels utilize organics, applied chemicals, wood smoke and painting by the fire itself to enhance the surface.
